The Media Wallet is a policy project developed as part of the Europaeum Scholars Programme, a two-year European initiative bringing together doctoral researchers from leading universities to work on pressing policy challenges.
The project addresses a structural problem in the digital information ecosystem: while access to information has expanded, sustainable revenue models for high-quality journalism have weakened. As outlined in the policy report, the Media Wallet proposes a pan-European platform that allows users to access independent journalism on a pay-per-article basis, while also introducing a “Youth News Pass” to encourage news consumption among younger audiences.

The project was developed through collaboration with researchers and practitioners across Europe and informed by expert interviews with stakeholders in journalism, policy, and academia. It was presented and discussed with policymakers and experts working on media and digital policy at the European level.
Building on this work, we are currently exploring revenue and payment solutions aimed at improving the financial sustainability of reliable news media, with a focus on reducing friction for users while supporting independent outlets.
